Chapter 6 The Baby's Father

Henrietta hurriedly went over to help Thalia up. "You poor thing. Are you hurt? Come and let me have a look." Thalia got up from the floor, shaking her head. "I'm fine, Grandma. Don't worry." No amount of bodily pain Thalia was experiencing right now could match the despair swelling in her heart. Henrietta's heart ached for Thalia, seeing how kind and considerate she was. "My poor, darling Lia. Don't worry. I'll keep you safe as long as I'm still breathing. Even if Kiera does give birth to a son, I still won't let her take over our family." Thalia held Henrietta's hand, feeling incredibly touched. "Thank you for being so kind to me, Grandma." Henrietta was the only person in this family who genuinely cared for Thalia. She was always the first to leap into action the moment anything happened to the Marquette family. Alden would never have helped the Marquette family in the first place if Henrietta hadn't stood up for them all those years ago. With Henrietta around, Josephine didn't dare act out of line toward Thalia, no matter how much Josephine hated Thalia, either. All Josephine could do was poke around behind Thalia's back to try to get back at her. So, when Henrietta went to Windspire Manor for the summer, Josephine ended up treating Thalia like a maid in order to please Kiera. Thalia had endured it all because she didn't want to make things difficult for Alden. Who knew Alden and Josephine would cross the line today, all because of some stupid bone broth? After chatting with Henrietta for some time, Thalia lost her desire to head out. So, she went back to her room upstairs. A video of Alden and Josephine accompanying Kiera in the hospital for her checkup was then sent to Thalia's phone. In the video, Alden carefully supported Kiera's weight. Whenever someone walked past and nearly bumped into Kiera, Alden would quickly shield her for fear she might get hurt. The two even leaned in close to whisper to one another sometimes. They were so intimate with each other that it was as if they were a married couple. Meanwhile, Josephine was busy checking and retrieving the doctor's reports. There was not an ounce of the harshness she always showed Thalia on her face. Instead, Josephine looked incredibly caring and attentive. Then, Thalia received a call from her best friend, Elowen Hartleigh. She was the one who'd sent Thalia the video. The moment Thalia answered the call, Elowen cried out in anger. "I happened to bump into Alden and Kiera today when I was on my shift. Alden and his mother were so attentive to Kiera it almost made me wonder if Alden was the baby's father instead!" Thalia chuckled mockingly. "He probably is." Josephine had wanted a grandchild for so long. Now that Kiera was pregnant, Josephine wasn't going to give a damn as to who the child's father was. All that mattered to Josephine was that she had a grandchild now. "If Alden really is the baby's dad, then his elder brother must've been cucked sideways to Sunday!" Elowen yelled. "How is Kiera doing, by the way?" Thalia asked. She used to be more polite when addressing Kiera, given that the latter was her elder sister-in-law and all. But now, even Kiera's name disgusted Thalia. Even though Elowen wasn't an obstetrician, she was still able to swiftly obtain whatever information she needed. Five minutes later, Thalia received Kiera's test results. "Kiera's fine. Her progesterone levels are just a little low. All she needs is some bed rest to recover," Elowen said. Elowen sounded a little confused as she continued, "If I remember correctly, Kiera's previous checkup was just last week. What is she doing here today? What's more, both your husband and mother-in-law are here with her. Did something happen?" Elowen and Thalia had been best friends since they were children. They shared everything with each other and had a bond far closer than that of blood-related siblings. Hence, there was nothing Thalia couldn't reveal to her. After listening to the whole story, Elowen angrily slammed her hand on the table and jumped to her feet. "Kiera was clearly doing that on purpose! Bone broth made only by you, my ass! Kiera is clearly treating you like a maid, having you answer to her every beck and call! "Now that you've stopped playing along, she's intentionally stirring up trouble between you and Josephine so she can win Alden's sympathy!" Thalia no longer cared whether or not Kiera had done all this on purpose. "By the way, have you brought up the topic of divorce to Alden yet? Has he signed the papers?" Elowen asked. "I didn't mention it to him yet," Thalia said expressionlessly. Elowen felt anxious for Thalia. "Why not? Alden's a filthy, vile piece of shit. Do you plan to wait until New Year's or something?" "Alden still needs our marriage to shield his affair with Kiera. He's not going to agree to a divorce if I bring it up right now," Thalia explained. Based on Josephine's personality, she was bound to start looking for other women for Alden to marry once Thalia divorced him. Thalia was "obedient" and "easy to manipulate", hence she was the perfect shield for Kiera and Alden. If someone else took Thalia's place, the pair of cheaters wouldn't have things nearly as easy as they did now. Elowen gave it some thought before agreeing with Thalia. "Well, what do you do now, then? You can't just let this drag on, can you?" Thalia's eyes glinted coldly as she gazed at Kiera and Alden onscreen. "Alden did accidentally sign the divorce agreement earlier today, so let's just wait for it to take effect." "That works, too." Elowen consoled her friend. "I'm off duty tonight. Let's grab a drink together!" "Alright," Thalia agreed without hesitation.
