Chapter 20
Esther's chest rose and fell with anger. "What else do you want? How could you even think I'd lie about something as serious as a child?"
Aaron scoffed. "You were seeing Russell behind my back. Would you have gotten involved with him if the child were really mine? I'm sorry, but I don't believe a word that comes out of a liar like you."
His words drew sharp gasps from the people nearby. The nosy employees now stared at Esther with obvious disgust. Her face burned with rage and shame under their judgmental stares.
"Aaron! You ought to show some gratitude. Don't forget you married into the Butterfield family. You would've been nothing without me. Think about all those projects in recent years that helped you rise to deputy director. It was my dad who paved the way for you—"
Before Esther could finish, Aaron suddenly stepped toward her, his eyes locked on hers with blazing intensity. She flinched, instinctively shrinking back from him.
