Chapter 17
"Lilith, your body's too weak. Take it easy, I need to step out for a bit," Emmanuel said gently, pushing down the unease in his chest, trying to sound like his usual self.
"Emmanuel, don't go! I want to be with you—I don't ever want to be apart again!" Lilith's voice was soft and clingy, almost pleading.
"Hey, it's okay. Elena's gone, and her kidney's no longer viable. I'm going to find another donor. You just focus on resting, alright? Get ready for surgery, and we'll get through this." Emmanuel's voice was warm, coaxing her like always.
Deep inside, Lilith cursed. Damn it. Her plan had been airtight. If Emmanuel had shown up just a little later that day, she would've already had Elena's kidney and be fully recovered by now—and totally free to enjoy life with Emmanuel.
"Okay… I'll do whatever you say. But promise me you won't overwork yourself for me, alright? That's the last thing I want," she replied, pretending to be sweet and understanding.
