Chapter 28
Lilith felt too weak to move, let alone go see Emmanuel. She could only try to comfort herself silently.
It's fine, she thought. Once I get the surgery, I'll bounce back. Then I can see Emmanuel soon, and we'll get married, have kids… everything will be okay.
"Surgery isn't a big deal," she told herself through gritted teeth. "They've got the best doctors, and with the Mitchells' connections, there's no way this illness can beat me."
The following day, she was wheeled straight into the operating room. The blinding white lights above made her eyes sting, and the sharp smell of disinfectant hit her so hard it made her head spin. Before she could say a single word, a doctor injected her with anesthesia.
She felt numbness wash over her body, but strangely, her senses grew sharper.
She felt it. The scalpel slicing across her abdomen. Like a helpless lamb ready for slaughter, her whole body turned to ice, her teeth chattering uncontrollably from the fear and cold drilling through her.
