Chapter 90
"I went to the hospital..." Serena bit the bullet and tried to come clean. She was hoping to ask him for a favor—to help transfer Dylan’s mom to Concord General Hospital. Maybe it could make things a bit easier for Betty Martinez.
"What did the doctor say?" Matthew cut her off before she could finish. He remembered she'd taken the afternoon off saying she felt unwell, and his voice softened. He'd been too wrapped up in work to check on his wife, and now a touch of guilt crept in.
Serena explained carefully, "It wasn't for me. I went to see a friend’s mom. She’s really sick... late-stage cancer.” She snuck a few glances at Matthew’s face. Still expressionless.
Would he be mad if he knew she saw Dylan? She wasn’t sure.
"A friend? Ivy?"
"No... it was Dylan." Serena didn’t want to hide it. There was nothing shady between her and Dylan, so why act sneaky?
Silence.
That pause dragged on painfully.
What Matthew said next would decide whether she dared to ask for his help.
