Camille shot me an icy look as she questioned me.
"Ms. Layton, you said nothing about assigned seats at your birthday party." I worked up some patience and explained to her, but all I got in return was her unreserved mockery.
"Assigned seats? Do you think you're worthy of that, Max?" Camille pointed at the door as she said sarcastically, "Assigned seats are reserved for people with dignity, not lapdogs. No, Max. You deserve to stand. Do it. Stand up now!"
Camille and Kieran's reckless mocking and sneering sounded particularly grating to my ear. I glanced at her, chuckled, and rose to my feet.
As long as the contract was still in effect, I would not stir up any trouble for the Layton family. Nothing would faze me, even if they insulted and humiliated me in public.
