#Chapter 23 We’re free
The meeting of the self-serving trio before me and Blaze seems to come to a natural end once they’ve confirmed that Maximus was not the one who shot at me and Emma at Luna Theater and that I am expected to be dead by morning. In a flash, they all shift back into their wolves, taking off in opposite directions.
Blaze waits a while, until the breeze blows by free of their scents once, twice, three times. Then she slowly lets go of the shadows, allowing them to retreat to the trees and bushes from which they came.
As soon as the shadows dissipate, a weakness overcomes me. If I were in human form, I would sit down right on the dirt beneath us for fear of fainting. But contained within Blaze, I only blink slowly, like I’m about to lose consciousness.
What’s wrong? Blaze’s attention that had been focused externally for any remaining threats turns inward as she notices my waning energy.
I’m not sure what’s wrong, so I don’t know what to tell her.
Blaze whines, cursing within us.
