#Chapter 57
Mae’s POV
I stand in the threshold to my home, gaping at my ex-husband and opponent in the upcoming presidential election. This is a joke, a trick, something other than real. Aaron Kensington can’t possibly want to help me win the presidential election.
“You want help to win the presidential election?” Assuming I misheard, I repeat back what he must have actually said.
He takes a deep breath, like he hates that he has to say it again. It almost looks like he can hardly believe his own words.
“No. I want to help you win the presidential election.”
I glance over his shoulder as Ruby and her friends disappear down the street. Maybe it was good timing that she wanted to go out and play. “Why should I believe you?”
“Good.” Aaron gently shoulders past me, into the house without an invitation. “You shouldn’t trust me; you shouldn’t trust anyone.”
I close the door and watch as Aaron puts on the tea kettle in my kitchen. He pulls down three mugs.
