Mae’s POV
Henry and I watch Aaron as he leaves my house, walking next door to his own home. I peak down the street, too, but there’s no sign of Ruby coming back yet. I turn to lean my back against my front door.
Henry and I exchange a weighted look. There are so many uncertainties, so many important things at stake. So many questions Henry could ask me.
I love that the one he chooses is, “Do you trust him?”
I sigh, then smirk at him. “Depends on the topic.”
Henry lets out a half laugh, his shoulders relaxing a little. I didn’t realize how tense we were and how much that comic relief was needed.
“I trust him with Ruby’s life.” I start with that because it’s the easiest to answer. “Everything he said about Emma and not wanting to marry her, it was a little out of character, but I believe him because of how it impacts Ruby.”
Henry nods and follows me as I slump onto the couch. He settles next to me, reaching for my feet to rub them. The second he applies pressure though,
