Maybe it was something Elliot said that triggered Clayton, but his hand suddenly loosened, and Charisse slipped even further out—half her thigh was already past the edge.
She clung harder to Clayton's wrist, even though nothing she did could actually stop her from slipping more.
Then she heard a soft noise above. Someone with a rope fastened to his waist was slowly lowering himself down. Their eyes met, and he quickly brought a finger to his lips with a "shh" gesture.
He was still a few meters away, so she calculated the time and quickly said, "Mr. Ellis, you've got this all wrong."
Clayton glanced back. "Hmm?"
"You said Elliot was the sentimental type. Maybe he is—but definitely not toward me," she said, trying to buy time. "If you already know about our past, then I guess you know how we broke up. I dumped him. Played him hard."
"I wasn't good to him back then. Treated him like crap, honestly."
"And from what I heard, I even caused that car crash he was in. He almost died."
