Each word landed like a jab, slicing right into Nelson's chest, sharp and unforgiving.
He didn't say a word in response, just silently watched as Dominic laid out the food from the box.
On the top shelf was a piece of plain sponge cake, sitting bare on a ceramic plate. It wasn't fancy at all, but the moment he picked it up, a soft sweetness floated up.
Below that were a few dishes—same stuff Dominic had in the kitchen earlier. Only difference was, these had gone a bit cold, looking more like leftovers. Honestly, even sadder than what Nelson had managed to eat.
Combined with how he looked now—disheveled, bruised, emotionally wrecked—it only made him seem more pitiful, more lonely.
Dominic set everything down, gave his bro a quick pat on the shoulder.
