Chapter 6

Margot was about to sit up from the hospital bed when the hospital director walked in. "Margot, because of your misconduct, which has severely damaged the hospital's reputation, we're terminating your employment. I suggest you reflect on your actions." Margot watched the director's retreating figure and let out a self-mocking laugh. When they needed her, they praised her to the skies. Now that they didn't, they discarded her like trash. Margot spent three full days in the hospital. Cameron never once showed up. After being discharged, Margot returned home. She was about to push open the door when her footsteps froze in place. "I will not divorce Margot! I don't want to hear another word about it!" Cameron slammed his fist down on the table in fury. The glass shattered instantly. Cameron's mother, Amelia Hearth, sat on the couch with a displeased expression, her eyes full of disdain and dissatisfaction toward Margot. She said, "The news that Colonel Reid's wife fooled around with men has spread through every street in Southbridge. If you don't divorce her, are you planning to let her give birth to some bastard child to be the Reid family heir?" Cameron tore the divorce papers in front of him to shreds, his face dark with rage. "The day I found Margot, I gave her contraceptives. I won't touch her again either, so she won't have any children. As for the Reid family heir, I'll have Vera give birth to one for me." Standing outside the door, Margot gripped the doorknob tightly. The veins on the back of her hand bulged. Cameron's so-called love was absurdly revolting. That night, with the cold wind howling, Margot sat at her desk and called Andrew. "Liquidate all the Reid family assets under my name." Andrew on the other end was confused but didn't dare ask why. "Understood. Your divorce proceedings with Colonel Reid have also entered the final stage. You'll have the approved divorce papers in ten days at most." Margot nodded. "Please hurry. I must leave in ten days." As soon as the words left her mouth, the bedroom door was shoved open. Cameron stood in the doorway, his face livid. "Where are you going?" Margot's grip on the phone tightened. She was about to speak when a knocking sound came from downstairs. Cameron went downstairs and opened the door. Vera immediately threw herself into his arms, looking distraught. "Cameron, my mother has been suffering from constant chest pain ever since the surgery. What should I do?" Cameron held her in his arms, consoling her gently, but his gaze swept coldly over Margot nearby. "Why does Vera's mother have such serious complications? What exactly did you do during the surgery?" Margot looked at Vera and let out a cold laugh. "I operated on her mother's brain. As for why her chest hurts, you should ask her yourself." Vera cried even harder. "Cameron, I heard that deepwater kelp from the ocean floor can cure any ailment. "Since Dr. Monroe says my mother's pain has nothing to do with her, then I'll go find the medicine at the bottom of the ocean myself. She's my only mother. I can't bear to watch her suffer." Vera turned to leave, but Cameron pulled her forcefully into his arms. "You can't swim. You'll get hurt if you go down there." Then, Cameron turned his gaze to Margot. "Margot, Vera's mother's complications are your fault. You go find the deepwater kelp for Vera. Consider it making amends."
