Chapter 8
When Margot returned to the Reid residence, she developed a high fever. It lasted for days before she could finally manage a bit of plain chicken soup.
That day, Margot gathered her few belongings and was about to pack them into her suitcase when the bedroom door was violently shoved open. Cameron stormed in, his face livid as he grabbed Margot's hand roughly.
He yelled, "What did you do to the deepwater kelp? Why did Vera's mother start vomiting and having diarrhea after taking it? Her condition's even worse now!"
Margot tried to shake off Cameron's grip but couldn't summon any strength. "You took the kelp yourself. Something goes wrong, and you blame me?"
Cameron stared at her, his eyes dark with malice. "Margot, your methods are as filthy as you are. You'd better pray nothing happens to Vera's mother. Otherwise, I won't let you get away with this."
Margot's body stiffened. Cameron's look of disgust cut straight through her.
Cameron raised his hand, and two soldiers immediately rushed in.
He looked at Margot coldly. "Since you still refuse to repent, go kneel at the hospital entrance. Stay there until Vera's mother is out of danger."
Margot lifted her head and stared at him in disbelief. "Cameron, you want me to kneel for a murderer's mother?"
Cameron's expression was icy. "You need to face the consequences of what you've done."
Margot clenched her fists tightly. "The biggest mistake I ever made was marrying you!"
Cameron froze for a moment, then his face darkened further. "Take my wife away. She doesn't get up without my permission."
Margot was dragged to the hospital entrance like a criminal. When she refused to kneel, one of the soldiers kicked her hard in the shin.
Margot fell to her knees with a painful thud at the hospital entrance under everyone's mocking stares.
"Isn't that the famous genius doctor Margot Monroe? Why is she kneeling there like a criminal?"
"I heard she had an affair with men and abused her position, causing serious post-surgical complications to a patient. She deserves this!"
Passersby stared at her with contempt, their looks cutting into her like knives. She knelt from the morning until evening before Vera finally emerged from the hospital.
She said, "Dr. Monroe, my mother is out of danger now. I also pleaded with Cameron to let you go home and rest."
As soon as Vera finished speaking, the beeper in Margot's pocket vibrated. It was a message from Andrew. "Dr. Monroe, your divorce proceedings with Colonel Reid are complete. I've had the divorce papers delivered to you."
Reading the message, Margot let out a breath of relief. She could finally leave.
Margot struggled to her feet and looked at Vera sharply. "Vera, I'll be watching for your downfall."
With that, she straightened her back and walked step by step into the night.
Leaving the hospital, Margot returned home directly. She picked up her suitcase and took one last look at the estate that had imprisoned her for five years. Without a shred of nostalgia, she walked out the Reid residence gates.
Just as she reached the gate, a sedan pulled up smoothly in front of her. The window slowly rolled down, revealing a chiseled, stern face.
"Margot, it's been a while," the man said.
…
Cameron sat in the corridor of the hospital when Winnie's attending physician approached with a test report.
The physician said, "Colonel Reid, according to Mrs. Sanders's examination results, she developed gastroenteritis because she ignored medical advice and consumed large amounts of meat and rich foods. It's nothing serious. Dr. Monroe's surgery was flawless."
Cameron's hand froze as he held the report. He was about to speak when Caleb came running over in a panic, holding a brick phone. "Colonel, there's an emergency at home."
The moment Cameron answered, he heard his mother's crying voice on the other end. "Cameron, something's happened! Your father was in a car accident, and glass pierced his heart.
"He needs emergency surgery, but the location is too dangerous. Not a single doctor in all of Southbridge will take the case."
Panic flashed in Cameron's eyes.
The physician standing nearby suddenly spoke up. "Among all the surgeons in Southbridge, I'd estimate only Dr. Monroe would dare take on this surgery. Unfortunately, Dr. Monroe's hand is ruined. But if she guides another surgeon, there might be a chance."
Hearing this, Cameron immediately sent his men to find Margot. However, they all came back with the same answer.
Margot had completely disappeared from Southbridge.
