Watching without seeing
Lilith's POV
I sat in the backseat as the car moved through the Verona estate, smoothly.
My hands were resting in my lap, fingers loosely intertwined, though I hadn’t realized I had folded them that tight.
As we began to pass the last bend, I turned my head.
Damien’s mansion was standing behind us, bearing clean lines as usual, cold stone and a glass surface that reflected nothing back.
The gate slid shut behind the car, and right after that happened, the question from the night before surfaced again, clearer now, sharper than it had been when Damien blurted it,
“Why were you waiting outside?”
I closed my eyes briefly, replaying it, not the words actually, but the way he had asked it. The pause before it. The look on his face.
That hadn’t been suspected. It hadn’t been controlled as well, it had been a worry. The realization settled heavier than I expected.
The truth between the two men in my life had finally taken shape, and now that it had, I just couldn’t unsee it.
