Chapter 10 You Should Break Up With Him First

It was not Michael on the line but his assistant, who had called back. Disappointment washed over Emma, but she held on to a sliver of hope. "I’m a classmate of Mr. Brown, Emma Wilson. Could you tell him to call me back? It's important." "Will do, Ms. Wilson. Anything else?" "Just that, thanks," she said, her voice trailing off. The phone call ended, and in the silence, Emma felt a deep connection with her mother's past despair. She felt the urge to just jump and end all these troubles in one swift, final move—just like her mother once did. … The chill of the hospital seeped deep into the night. Startled awake on the hard chair beside her mother's bed, Emma realized she had fallen asleep from sheer exhaustion. She checked on her mother, who was still fast asleep, and adjusted her blanket. Her phone screen was bombarded with Isabella’s texts. [Emma, hold tight. I’ve called my folks, and they'll lend us another 200,000. That'll put us at 400,000! We'll make up for the rest together. Tomorrow, I'll reach out to more friends. We'll make it, I promise! [Don’t freak me out and message me back! Don’t do anything rash! [Emma, where are you? I'm in Nordhaven City now. I'm on my way to get the money. We’re at 450,000 now!] Emma rushed out of the ICU and called Isabella back immediately. "Do you know that you almost gave me a heart attack?!" "Sorry... I had my phone on silent mode in the ICU." "I just didn't want you to lose hope all of a sudden. Remember what they say, if money can solve it, then it's not really a problem, is it?" Emma was about to respond with a weak smile when she caught sight of a tall figure emerging at the end of the corridor. His presence was like a miracle manifesting before her weary eyes. Isabella’s voice was a persistent buzz in Emma’s ear. “Hey? Emma! Can you hear me? Why have you gone silent?” Striding over with purpose, the man in question drew closer. His brows creased into a frown before he slid off his coat and draped it around Emma’s slender shoulders. “It's cold at night. You’ll freeze.” His voice remained cool and deep, his piercing gaze fixed on her. Emma, overwhelmed, wondered if she was seeing things out of sheer desperation. “Who is that? Emma, talk to me!” Isabella’s persistent voice came through the phone. Upon regaining her senses, Emma muttered an excuse about being busy and ended the call in a hurry. “Why are you here?” “You were the one looking for me, weren’t you?” Licking her chapped lips nervously, Emma instinctively reached up to tame her hair. “Yes, I... I needed to see you.” When it was time to speak, though, Emma realized she had lost her words. Only a brief silence passed before Michael asked in a low voice, “Have you decided?” Without a second thought, Emma replied, “I’ll marry you! No, that’s not what I meant. I'm ready to accept your help. Can you... help my mother?” Seeing Emma’s panic was new to him. His lips quirked up in an involuntary smile, which faded as quickly as it appeared. “And your boyfriend? What about him?” Emma was speechless. “I’m not interested in being the other guy. You should break up with him first.” 'Immediately,' he added internally. Emma’s first instinct was to deny having a boyfriend at all, but would that not reveal she had come up with an excuse to reject him earlier? Would he think she was toying with him by changing her tune so fast? After a brief pause, she nodded in resolve. “I’ll do it right now.” “Alright then. It’s late. We’ll go get our marriage certificate first thing tomorrow.”
