Chapter 14 Jasmine Comes Home

Nevertheless, Emma remembered her role. "Tomorrow, breakfast is on me," she asserted. It felt weird for a benefactor to serve their beneficiary. Michael's laugh was soft, his casual attire giving him an air of laid-back charm. He settled into his chair and offered a simple truth. "Relax. After today's registration, you'll officially be my wife." With the ice broken, Emma dove in. "How long are we doing this for, Mr. Brown? Should we draft an agreement?" Business was business, and Emma needed to know where she stood. If Michael proposed a long duration, she would have to reconsider it. A man would be in his prime for many years. Even after they divorced, he would still be a highly sought-after bachelor. On the other hand, she would be left in dire straits. She would not be able to snag a man considering her advanced age and miserable situation. Michael, who was holding a fork and knife, thought for a moment before agreeing. "Let's put it in writing. We'll start with one year." "Sounds good to me." The oatmeal, now cool enough, was surprisingly good. … Post-breakfast, they handled the formalities—photos, signatures, and certificates. Before she knew it, Emma was legally bound as Mrs. Brown. The marriage certificate in her hand felt like a prop in a play. "I'll send my assistant with you to the hospital to check on your mother. After work, come to my place," Michael ordered. He was all business once again in his sharp suit. "Okay," Emma agreed as she stepped into a new life. Michael's assistant ushered her away. Just as the world seemed to settle, a sleek Maybach slid quietly into view. It stopped beside Michael. The back window slid down to frame Noah's devilish grin. "I'll never get you. Why go through the trouble of marrying her without proposing to her? What are you trying to do?" Michael's gaze was icy as he slipped into the driver's seat. "She feels nothing for me right now." Noah gaped at him. "And? You do realize the hell you'll be in if your folks catch wind of your shotgun wedding, right? Is she really worth that?" Noah could never fathom Michael's gambit. To him, women were simple. If he was not into them, it was a one-night stand and a quick farewell. If she was a catch, maybe a few more nights and nothing more. Michael was now playing for keeps over some assistant, and Noah could not make heads or tails of it. "They won't find out if you keep it under wraps," Michael shot back. "That's like sticking your head in the sand!" Noah retorted with an eye roll. "I'm dying to see how this pans out. If she keeps playing hard-to-get, what's your play?" Michael just hunched over his laptop, dismissing the conversation. There was no time to delay. He needed to finish his work before nightfall. It was their first night together as husband and wife, after all. As the engine hummed to life, Noah nudged him. "Hey, Jasmine's flying back next week. We should all catch up. Did you see her latest posts? She's killing it!" His words buzzed with excitement, but Michael was unmoved. "Maybe next week." "Come on! She's coming back just for you, and you're giving her the cold shoulder?"
