Chapter 7 I Have a Boyfriend

"Mr. Brown." It took Emma only a moment to find her answer. "I have a boyfriend." She did not believe in fairy-tale fortunes, never had. A pie in the sky was not something she would bet on. It did not matter if he was sizing her up or truly in need of a wife for reasons unknown. She was not about to play along. Saying she was taken would put this whole bizarre situation to bed. In response, Michael pursed his thin lips and showed a skeptical gaze that grew a shade darker. "For real?" "Why would I lie to you, Mr. Brown?" She didn’t wait for him to continue and lowered her head slightly. "I won't take up more of your time. May I have the contract, please?" "Sure." His agreement was terse, his nod brisk. Without another word, he told her the contract was with his secretary. Then, he shut the suite’s door. Emma ran with the contract in hand, desperate to chalk up their conversation to a daydream. Michael marrying her? Ridiculous. ... Emma did not go straight to Anna with the contract. She took it to Mr. Taylor. She had poured herself into this project, and walking away did not sit right with her. She knew she had to stroke Mr. Taylor's ego, even if it meant swallowing her pride. Upon seeing Emma, Mr. Taylor’s expression soured instantly. "What’s this about?" "Mr. Taylor, I'm sorry for yesterday... I've thought it over, and it was my mistake," Emma said with a hopeful smile while stepping forward. "I’ve been at the helm of this MystiCorp deal. If I pass it off to Anna now, things might slip through the cracks, and that can’t happen. Could you maybe give me another shot?" She pitched her voice low and laden with earnestness. She hoped he would see reason beyond his bruised pride. The higher-ups were already on edge because of the Skydancer Corp fiasco, and any slip-up with MystiCorp would not just be Emma's problem. It would likely cost her the job. Mr. Taylor pondered for a moment before shooting her a dismissive look. "So, you're saying the MystiCorp deal can't survive without you?" "Far from it! I'm just committed to seeing the MystiCorp project succeed. Look at this contract. After countless negotiations, I brought our figures to an all-time high. You're aware of the dedication that this took." Mr. Taylor briefly reviewed the contract and had to admit it was a better bargain than he had anticipated. He cleared his throat, but his expression was still stern. "This is your final shot. You're aware of how tightly Mr. Brown runs this company. Any more issues with MystiCorp and you’re out, no second thoughts." Emma felt a wave of relief seeing that Mr. Taylor had softened. "I'll give it my all. Thank you, Mr. Taylor." Just around the corner, a tall man turned away. His striking features were set in a stony expression as he extinguished his cigarette. Noah was grinning from ear to ear, his demeanor cheeky and unapologetic. "She's quite the beauty, isn't she? It's no surprise you're smitten. "But hey, leave her to me. Getting a woman to play along is child's play. Just give the nod and she’ll be waiting in your bed tonight, no fuss." Michael's frown deepened. He stayed quiet, enveloped in shadows. His silence only egged Noah on. "Scaring a low-level employee like her is a piece of cake. There's no need to get rough." "If you lay a finger on her, you might as well forget about returning to your house."
