Even the few vegetable vendors who had not sold out had left their cars at the market and gone home early. Matthew sat in his car and said to Miles, "It feels like we're the last two people in this entire market."
Miles glanced around uneasily. "It's too empty—it's making me nervous. I don't know why, but I've got a bad feeling. Maybe we should... come back during the day instead."
Matthew waved dismissively. "You can go ahead. Find a hotel and stay there. I'll spend the night here."
Miles puffed out his chest and declared, "I'm not scared of anything anymore. I've seen dead bodies—I'm not going to be frightened off by anything else."
Matthew nodded. "Fine. Then you stay and keep watch."
Miles was quiet for a moment before sighing, "All I wanted was to sell the ginger I grew. I didn't expect to run into so much trouble.
"It feels like a battle out here. If I had known it would be like this, I would've never returned to farming. I would've just listened to my dad."
