Rooney yelled anxiously, "Stop, stop, what are you doing?"
He didn't want a conflict, but he didn't want to just stand by and watch them tear down his gate either.
Inside the cab of the excavator sat a heavyset man in a white short-sleeved shirt. He had a cigarette in his mouth.
Hearing the shout, he glanced at Rooney with disinterest. Then, he stepped harder on the accelerator.
The engine roared louder. The bucket jerked with force.
The front wall, along with the rusty iron gate, tilted and fell outward.
The onlookers screamed in fright, hurriedly backing away.
The front wall and gate crashed to the ground. Clouds of dust rose and rolled toward Rooney.
Rooney was swallowed in the dust, coughing nonstop.
When it finally settled, his hair and eyebrows were covered in white powdery dust, making him look like an old statue forgotten in a rundown chapel.
