The New Year vibe was lively. Mr. Lewis let out a hearty laugh. "Megan really sees straight to the core. My granddaughter's smart, no doubt!"
Samuel curled his lips. "Grandpa, you're clearly biased. Always siding with the girls."
Just then, Mrs. Lewis jumped in. "Biased toward girls? I never saw him treat Wendy that well!"
The room went quiet. Everyone turned to her.
She seemed rattled by the sudden silence, her voice turning shaky. "Did I say something wrong? Did any of you ever care about her? All you ever wanted was to get rid of her! She ended up burning to death in prison, and every one of you is to blame—blood on your hands!"
Mr. Lewis slammed the table. "Still the same nonsense! Can't even enjoy a peaceful New Year's dinner with you around! Are you doing this just to fight with everyone?"
"Mom, it's New Year's Eve. Why are you bringing this up now?" Zachary frowned. "And didn't you already find out whether Wendy really died or not?"
Mrs. Lewis's hands trembled, her voice cracked
