"No way," Charles snapped, shaking his head hard.
That kid couldn't be his. Not a chance. He sucked in a shaky breath, a twisted grin tugging at the corner of his lips.
Because if that child were really his... it would mean he'd been the one responsible for its death.
No. Not his. That couldn't be true. Just thinking about it made his chest loosen a little. He was probably just too strung out, thinking nonsense.
He tugged at his suit, straightening it up, trying to compose himself before getting the hell out of this maddening place.
But he'd barely taken a few steps when an instinctive sense of danger jolted through him.
Years of experience kicked in. He swerved sideways just in time to hear a sharp swish and see something metallic slam into the wall behind him.
