Chapter 17
I shrugged. "He was my Dad," I said. I knew that calling Alex my Dad upset him. His grip on the steering wheel tightened, turning his knuckles white. I saw the vein on the side of his head, popping out, pressing against his skin.
"Did he ever lay a hand on you?"
"No!" I yelled quickly, slapping my hand over my mouth at my abrupt response. I was afraid that he'd be upset at me for yelling, but he didn't say anything about it. "He never hit me or layed a hand on me." I said. "Now that I know the whole truth, I hate him for keeping it from me, but I'll never be able to truly hate him," I admitted. "Even if he did keep me from my family."
I rubbed my sweaty palms on my shirt. I wasn't really ready to talk about my dead 'father' just yet. I tried to hide the fact that tears were running down my face, but Evan noticed. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close to him. My ear was against his chest and I could hear his steady heart beat,
