Chapter 43 Treachery Begins At Home
Martha widened her eyes dramatically. "Is that true, dear? Is Victor really a bodyguard?"
Carol nodded. "I told him to quit the job, but he wouldn't listen. I'm sure he'll come around if I have more time to talk to him."
Martha scowled. "Dear, I know you have heard this from your dad and me several times. But why don't you divorce that loser and marry James? The Colbert family owns lands, mansions, and expensive cars and has tremendous influence in the government; even gangsters pay obeisance to them. Carol shook her head. "I don't want to talk about this, mom. Whatever Victor is going through, all he needs is time. I can't give up on him at this point. It's my duty as his wife to support him."
Martha grimaced to show her disgust. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have let you marry that useless man. But your grandfather was adamant about it. He'd also ask you to divorce him if he were still alive. I am sure of that."
