Chapter 16
The next morning, Harvey woke up from his hangover with no memory of the night before. I put on my gentle, virtuous mask again and sat at the dining table, carefully spreading jam on bread.
This game of mutual deception was almost over. I had to play the final act perfectly.
He headed for the door. I hurried after him and called out to him in the front yard. "Your tie is crooked. Didn't you notice?"
He stopped, and as I straightened his collar, we really did look like a loving couple. That intimate moment was shattered when a bullet came flying.
The bullet grazed my cheek and hit the glass behind me with a crash. I screamed and shrank into Harvey's arms, mimicking the way Enna used to act.
She'd been afraid of thunder, afraid of blood, afraid of any sudden loud noises. Most of the time, she was as skittish as a rabbit.
