Eventually, Xavier unearthed the best bamboo shoots. He only stopped when his hoe struck a rock and snapped.
Still, he didn't look satisfied. His brow was furrowed so deeply it looked like a fly could get caught in it.
Scarlett pretended not to notice, casually tossing the shoots into the golf cart.
When Xavier reached the cart and saw it brimming with fresh spring bamboo shoots, a rare light flickered in his usually solemn eyes.
Scarlett handed him a bottle of water. "Feeling accomplished?"
Xavier gave a noncommittal nod. "Are we coming back tomorrow?"
Scarlett nearly tripped while walking. This guy was addicted to digging!
She glanced at the cart, packed with bamboo shoots. "These should last us a while. Let's wait a while before coming back."
Disappointment flickered in Xavier's eyes.
Scarlett caught it, and a faint sense of satisfaction bloomed within her. This little life experience seemed to be working. He was starting to appreciate these little moments.
