My words hit a nerve. Helen screamed at me to shut up.
"If it weren't for you, I would've been our parents' only daughter. I would've had all their love for myself. But no—you had to exist, stealing their attention. You've been competing with me since we were kids.
"You made trouble just to get noticed, and you ruined my celebration banquet. I will never forgive you for that."
I retorted sharply, "Helen, I'll say it again—I was really sick that day. I didn't ruin your banquet on purpose."
