Chapter 55
Nicholas was still caught up in a frenzy when Samantha gently pushed aside the servants trying to hold him down. She pulled his head into her arms, her voice soft by his ear.
"Nick, it's okay, it's okay! No one's hurting me, I'm totally fine. Really—thank you."
Her whisper was calm and soothing, slowly pulling him back from the edge. Only after the doctor administered a sedative did Nicholas finally drift off into an uneasy sleep.
Samantha tucked the blanket over him with a long sigh of relief. Right now, Nicholas's mind was no stronger than a child's. But the fact that he fought through his fear to protect her... it warmed her heart while stabbing it with guilt.
A single tear traced down her cheek without warning. It had been so long since her eyes had welled up. Ever since her father passed and she ended up in the orphanage, it was like her heart had turned to stone.
