Alexander raised an eyebrow. "I just happened to fall for a woman who can go toe-to-toe with me."
"Who falls in love with their rival?" Samantha scoffed lightly.
"Only people who envy you see you as a rival. I never did," Alexander replied without missing a beat.
Then, quick as lightning, he leaned in and gave her a swift peck on the lips.
Samantha's response was lukewarm, her tone noticeably stiff. "Hope you don't regret saying that. Honestly, I kinda preferred us the way we were before."
What she didn't say out loud was: "The closer you get, the further I'll pull away."
That thought had never changed—unless either of them died.
