That sentence hit like a clap of thunder, freezing Lisa in place. Even the tear tracks on her face seemed to stiffen.
So Samuel was just admitting it like that?
Lisa didn't dare think any further as a wave of overwhelming panic seized her.
The elevator door stopped on the VIP floor.
Samuel walked toward Madeline's ward, and Lisa jogged after him. Her heart pounded so hard that it felt like it might leap out of her throat, and her back was soaked with cold sweat.
When she saw Samuel's hand close around the ward door handle, Lisa shut her eyes in despair, and her mind went completely blank.
The door clicked open softly.
Lisa held her breath, but the scene she had feared didn't happen.
The ward was unusually quiet.
Trembling, Lisa opened her eyes and peeked past Samuel's shoulder.
Madeline lay alone on the hospital bed, seemingly asleep. There was a thermal container on the bedside table, but her parents were nowhere to be seen.
They were gone.
