Chapter 6 Go Abroad and Watch Your Grandmother Die

Before Elaine could slap him, her wrist was forcefully seized by Skylar. He sneered and said, "What's wrong? Did I hit a nerve? Are you furious because I was right? I bet dragging Eric abroad for treatment is just an excuse. The real plan is to run off and have a romantic getaway with that doctor, isn't it?" Eric rushed forward and tried to pry Skylar's hand off. "Let go of Elaine! I won't let you bully her!" Skylar frowned. He kept hold of Elaine's wrist and roughly shoved Eric to the ground with the other. Eric was already frail from his illness. After falling to the ground, he looked even paler than before. Elaine cried out anxiously, "Eric! Skylar, you've gone too far!" Skylar scoffed and let go of her wrist. He watched her scramble over to help Eric up and said sarcastically, "The two of you sure know how to act delicate. You're acting as if you're as fragile as glass bottles." Elaine saw blood trickling from the corner of Eric's mouth. Worried that his heart condition had flared up again, she frantically helped him up while fumbling for the medicine in her bag. In her haste, four small pill bottles tumbled out of her bag. Two were Eric's, and the other two were hers. Flustered, Elaine shoved her own bottles back into the bag and quickly shook out two pills for Eric. "Take these first. I'll take you to a doctor right away." Plenty of other things had spilled from her bag. Apart from the pill bottles, she didn't have time to pick up anything else. Skylar bent down and picked up her ID and passport from the floor. He examined them closely and said, "Looks like you're pretty well prepared. But here's the problem. I just realized you've been playing me for a fool, and I'm not divorcing you anymore." He took a few steps forward and blocked her path, refusing to let her take Eric back into the hospital. Elaine had no choice but to call Marcus, asking him to come and bring Eric back to the ward. Skylar's eyes grew colder as he spotted Marcus approaching in a white coat. "How touching. Just one phone call and he comes running. No wonder you'd go to all this trouble to get me to divorce you. It's all just to make room for your new lover." Marcus hurried over, still unaware of what had just happened. He looked at Elaine and asked, "What's wrong? Is everything alright?" Looking frightened, Eric immediately stood by Marcus' side. Eric had been in the hospital for a long time. As his attending doctor, Marcus felt like an older brother to him. Elaine didn't explain further. She only asked Marcus to take Eric back to his ward first. Skylar found it incredibly jarring as he watched Eric clutch Marcus' sleeve and speak to him so intimately. Even Elaine's own brother was so close to that doctor. Clearly, Elaine's relationship with Marcus was far from simple. Fury surged up in him again when he caught Elaine staring at Eric's retreating back. He slipped her ID and passport into his own wallet and said coldly, "You haven't even divorced me yet, but you're already planning to run off with another man. Elaine, life doesn't work that way. After everything you've done to Thea, even a lifetime of paying her back wouldn't be enough." Elaine saw her documents in his hands and furiously reached for them. "Give me back my ID and passport! Even if we're married, you have no right to take them away. Skylar, I don't owe you anything. If you refuse to divorce me, I'll file for divorce in court. And as for your accusations about me hurting Thea, show me the evidence. Go ahead and sue me if you want!" Skylar was momentarily stunned. Not long ago, she'd been crying and saying she loved him and didn't want a divorce. Now, she was talking about filing for divorce. After all her declarations of love, she was now rushing to divorce him and leave the country. Who would ever believe she wasn't already messing around with another man? Pulling out his phone, he tapped to play a video and held the screen up in front of her face. "I guess having another man backing you up has made you pretty bold. Well, take a good look at this and see if you still have the guts to go against me." Elaine glanced at the screen, freezing. In the video, her grandmother, Agatha Graham, lay in an unfamiliar ward. Several foreign doctors stood around her bed, including a man in a tailored suit. Elaine recognized him immediately. It was Colin Vale, Skylar's assistant. Skylar smiled, observing the unease on her face. "Guess which country this is? Agatha is almost 80 years old. If her body doesn't hold up, it wouldn't be considered medical malpractice, would it?" Elaine's hands clenched tightly. "Skylar, you're so despicable! This is illegal. I can call the police!" "Go ahead and report it. What evidence do you have to accuse me? Go on, try it. Let's see if the police will uncover the truth first or the news of Agatha's death." He calmly deleted the video and slipped his phone into his pocket. Elaine's voice finally softened. "Don't hurt my grandma. Come at me if you want. She's too old to handle this." Skylar grabbed her chin and forced her to look up at him. "You should've been this obedient sooner. Be back at Birchwood Estate before 6:00 pm tonight. Elaine, you still have a lot to pay for what you did to Thea." At that moment, his assistant approached and whispered, "Mr. Skylar, Mr. Joshua just called. He's urging you to get to the office." Skylar's eyes held a faint smile. His gaze swept over Elaine's face before he walked past her and left. Elaine hurried back toward the ward. Just as she reached the hallway, she saw Eric being wheeled out on a gurney by several doctors and nurses, their faces tight with worry. Marcus spotted her and said seriously, "He's vomiting blood again. They're taking him into the emergency room. Go pay the fees now. Do you have enough money?" As he spoke, he reached for his wallet, but Elaine quickly stopped him. "Thank you, Dr. Middleton. I have money on me. I'll go pay first." Marcus didn't argue further. He just nodded and quickly followed the gurney. Elaine, flustered, rushed downstairs to the payment counter. She pulled her bank card out of her bag and handed it over. The staff member swiped the card and gave it back to her, speaking with an impatient tone. "Miss, you need to pay 20 thousand dollars upfront. There's only a little over ten thousand dollars left on this card." Elaine frowned as she took the card back. She then realized she had left her other bank card at home. She had no choice but to hand over one of Skylar's cards from her bag. That card had no spending limit and still held some of the dividends from the Frey Holdings shares she had given Skylar. Technically, that money was rightfully hers. No matter what, saving Eric came first. Just as she handed the card over, a hand snatched it from her. Thea's scornful voice rang out. "Well, isn't this a coincidence? If I remember right, this card belongs to Sky. Aren't you two supposed to be getting divorced? Why are you still spending his money?" Elaine frowned and reached for the card. "That's none of your business. Give it back to me." Thea held the card firmly and pulled out a wad of cash from her purse. "Sky told me himself—from now on, everything he owns belongs to me. Why should I give this back to you? How about this? If you're desperate to save your brother, get on your knees and beg me. I might give you this cash." People waiting in line behind them urged them to move along. Elaine had no choice but to step out of the queue first. She said coldly, "I'll say it one last time—give me the card." Thea held the card up, looking at her provocatively. "This is mine. Why should I give it to you?" As she said this, she suddenly saw Skylar approaching with a dark expression on his face. The sight of Thea holding the bank card was the first thing he saw.
