What was I thinking?
Wade's POV:
F*ck. F*ck. F*ck.
That did not just happen.
I washed off the soap on my body, taking my time to gather my thoughts. That petite step sister of mine just walked in on me naked. Completely naked.
I don’t know how we’re going to move on from that. Especially when we’re just starting to be a family.
My father didn’t ask for my opinion before he flung, not just a step mother on me, but her very grown, very teenage daughter.
How old was she? Sixteen? She was f*cking small and now, she was supposed to be family.
F*ck that.
I wrapped a towel around my waist, stepping out of the shower. My clothes from yesterday were folded neatly by the sink. I dried off and changed into them, the tie long since ditched. I was wearing my favorite— a black button down shirt and black trousers.
The moment I stepped out of the bathroom, Leslie stepped out of her bedroom. We both paused, holding on to the handle.
Leslie had changed. She was wearing a faded navy blue shirt and pink shorts that stopped way too high for me not to notice. She stuttered, “I-uh… I’ll just.. I’ll go make breakfast.” She turned quickly, closing her room door behind her to walk away.
I closed the bathroom door and looked up to see her stop. She seemed to be bouncing on the spot before she turned. I raised a brow at her in question.
“I…” her eyes trailed downwards and then back to my face. “I didn't see anything, I swear!” She definitely saw everything. “I’m sorry.”
She was sorry. I offered her what I considered a friendly smile. “It’s fine. Mistakes happen. Hopefully, we can move on from this and agree that it never happened.” I said.
Please.
She nodded thoughtfully and pointed over her shoulders with her thumb. “Waffles or pancakes?” She asked.
“Pancakes, thanks.” I said, standing and waiting for her to walk away.
Leslie nodded again and turned, walking away. My eyes involuntarily drifted down to the swing in her hips before I caught myself. Despite how small she looked, she had quite the set of legs. They looked toned, sexy-
What the f*ck was I thinking?
She was my step sister. We were related. She was probably a minor and she was off limits.
“Get a hold of yourself, Wade Rivers.” I muttered to myself, before walking towards the living room. I made the mental decision that I was going to stay the f*ck away from her.
The front door opened. Sarah and Dad walked in, hand in hand. It was lunch time and I was just finishing off the chicken and chips Leslie had whipped up after insisting that we shouldn't order in.
Apparently, her mother had raised her to only order what she can't make. It was bullshit but it was good. Her cooking was great.
“Mom!” Leslie called, relieved to see her. She stood up from her position on the stool by the kitchen island and walked towards Sarah. She hugged her.
“Brandon.” She said, as a greeting before hugging my father.
He wrapped his hand around her and did this penguin waddle, side by side. “Les bear!” He called. “I missed you.”
I lifted a brow as Leslie laughed, pulling away. “You were gone for less than twenty four hours and I told you to stop calling me that.” She smiled.
Okay. I didn't know she and my father were that chill. It made me feel strangely jealous. And wary. I knew what happened the last time my father was close with someone my age.
I shook my head. No, this was his step daughter.
Sarah’s eyes found me and she smiled, walking over. I stood up just in time to get a hug from her. “Wade, I'm so glad to see that you're still here.” She said after we pulled away.
“I just figured I would stay in town for a couple days, help you guys with the move and all.” I said.
That was far from the truth. But I wasn't going to tell them I was hanging around because of some girl.
I glanced at Leslie. Especially not someone I shouldn't be around.
It was too late to leave now. I'd cancelled my ticket for a later date so I had to sit around and wait.
“Wade,” my father said, warmly coming to hug me.
It was a little awkward coming from him. We weren't the type of father - son to exchange hugs. It was usually curt nods or a slap on the back. Or a handshake.
“Hey, Dad, congratulations on the wedding again.” I said.
I noticed that Leslie was standing aside, watching. When she saw that I caught her staring, she looked away quickly. I tried not to think too much about it.
She stepped forward. “When are we moving?” she asked. Oh, she was aware of the move.
“There’s been a small issue.” Sarah started. “The developers didn't finish up before the wedding.”
“So, we won't be able to move in until two weeks.” my father finished, looking at Leslie.
“Oh, no,” Leslie said, glancing at me at the exact same moment as I did. She was thinking the same thing.
“The good news is that I already sold my house and the four of us will be staying here until we can move.” My father announced.
How the hell was that good news? I wanted to ask but I kept my tongue in check.
Sarah clapped cheering. “I know it's not big, or what you're used to, Wade. But it would be nice if we can take this time to bond, as a family.” she said.
My father could buy another house today if he wanted. He was a billionaire after all. But, Sarah wasn’t a fan of dramatically spending money for no reason. She wasn’t going to let him and he wasn’t going to cross her. I was stuck.
“It's fine, Sarah.” I said, tightly. I couldn't even go to a hotel. She wanted us to bond. “It's just a few days of sleeping on the couch. I’ll survive.”
A few days where I was stuck in this house, together with Leslie. With no friends and nowhere to go. Great.
“No, I can’t do that to you. That couch is terrible. I don't know how you managed last night.” Sarah said. “Leslie agreed to share her bedroom with you. You can sleep on a mattress on the floor. Right, Leslie?”
She never asked her. This was the first time that Leslie was hearing of this arrangement. I could tell by the look on her face. Leslie looked like a deer caught in headlamps.
She looked up at me, meeting my eyes and those beautiful blue eyes widened. I silently begged her to say no.
F*cking say no.
She flashed a dazzling smile at our parents. “Sure, why not. Wade can sleep with me.”
