Conrad suddenly stopped in his tracks.
The quiet alley was dead silent, except for the wind and the sound of two people breathing hard.
A few seconds later, he slowly turned his head and looked at Calliope, his gaze deep and unreadable.
Then he hooked up one side of his lips in a half-smirk, voice low and rough with a clear undertone of sarcasm.
"You can't even recognize your own husband?"
Calliope's pupils shrank. She blurted out, "It's really you?!"
A mix of anger and betrayal exploded inside her like a pressure cooker blowing its lid.
But before she could fully react, his next line dumped a bucket of ice water on her head.
He let out a cold laugh, sarcasm thick in his eyes.
"If I were your husband, you'd be dead a dozen times over."
Calliope was completely stunned.
She froze on the spot, whatever fury had started building instantly swapped out for a wave of confusion crashing over her.
She stared blankly at the man's retreating back, her mind totally blank.
