Chapter 1979

Sheena stared at him, puzzled. "Why would you think the baby Mavis is carrying is someone else's?" Nathaniel leaned against the wall, casually mocking himself, "Isn't it unbelievable? Maybe it's just my fate." He had to support Mavis' child, even if not his own. It seemed he was destined always to be tied to the shadow of an illegitimate child. Sheena and Elliot exchanged looks, growing more concerned about Nathaniel's mental state. They looked at the man who was spiraling into self-destructive behavior. Elliot asked calmly, "Nathaniel, she's your wife. Don't you trust her? Do you really think she would cheat on you?" Nathaniel averted his gaze, refusing to respond or acknowledge the question. Sheena shook her head in frustration. Mavis had pursued him from Harbor City all the way to Froania, chasing him for five years just to win his attention and marry him. Such a devoted person would not easily move on to another man and even start a family so soon. Did Kristen switch Nathaniel's brain? Why was he so stupid? The more Sheena thought about it, the angrier she became. She grabbed Elliot's arm and said, "I think he's lost his mind. He needs to face some real consequences to clear his head. Let's come back tomorrow to get him out." Elliot remained silent, allowing Sheena to lead him away. Nathaniel did not spare them a glance. He closed his eyes and leaned against the wall, needing to calm down and think about how he would face Mavis and her unborn child. … Outside the police station, Mavis paced back and forth, waiting anxiously. When she saw Sheena and Elliot, she quickly approached them. "Where's Nathaniel? Why isn't he with you?" Sheena reassured her, "Don't worry about him. He'll be fine. He needs to face some consequences, but he should be out by tomorrow night." Though relieved to know Nathaniel was safe and not mistreated by the police, Mavis still felt uneasy. "It's for the best. His temper is out of control. He really needed to face some consequences for what he did to Gavin." She rested her hand on her belly, tired from standing so long. Having been pregnant, Sheena noticed Mavis was not in great shape. She helped her into the car, saying, "Take care of yourself. You're pregnant, so don't stress or worry too much." Once all three were in the car, Sheena asked, "Mae, did you know Nathaniel suspects that the baby you're carrying isn't his?" Mavis sighed and admitted, "I know. I told him about it, and he hasn't doubted it." A flicker of sadness crossed her face as she spoke, despite her attempt to hide it. Sheena noticed the subtle change and gently patted Mavis' hand. "Nathaniel can be incredibly stubborn and intense when he's upset. You need to be extra careful during your pregnancy. You shouldn't provoke him with such remarks." Having seen Nathaniel's outbursts before, Sheena was genuinely concerned for her. Mavis understood Sheena's worry. "I didn't mean to provoke him. I just want to get a divorce and return to Harbor City with the baby. I don't need a husband anymore. I'm content with just having a child." Sheena supported her decision. "Do what you need to do. I know you've thought this through, but be cautious, especially with Nathaniel. If you're not planning to tell him the truth, stay away from him. Leave the ranch as soon as possible before he gets out." Sheena was well aware of how dangerous Nathaniel could be when he was obsessed, and she wanted to make sure Mavis understood that. Mavis nodded absentmindedly and replied, "I understand. Don't worry, I'll keep the baby safe and ensure nothing happens to it." Leaving the ranch was one thing, but finding a new place and moving all her belongings would be a hassle. She hoped that avoiding Nathaniel would eventually make him lose interest in pursuing her. It was late, and the temperature in Deltsburg had dropped significantly, making the night feel chilly.
