Chapter 14
After hanging up, Julian gripped the steering wheel and drove aimlessly through the streets.
Neon lights from the city streets slid across the windshield and washed over his face. The shadows and colors cast across his face made it hard to read his expression.
When his car passed by the prison on the outskirts, his chest tightened, and he instinctively slammed on the brakes.
Upon recalling that Wendy had served her time there, he got out and walked toward the prison gates.
The warden immediately recognized him and rushed over with a fawning smile. "Mr. Gray? To what do we owe this unexpected honor?"
Julian's Adam's apple bobbed, and his voice carried a tremor he fought to control.
"Wendy… How was she treated while she was serving her time here?"
The warden assumed he still held a grudge against her. So, he hurried over, eager to take credit, clearly fishing for praise. "Mr. Gray, rest assured. You made it clear she was never to be treated kindly, and we followed your orders,
