As the plane took off, the bustling city of Millfield shrank into a distant dot beneath the clouds.
Staring out the window at the fading skyline, Alyssa exhaled a long, slow breath.
In a slightly shaky voice, she vowed, "Dad, I'm leaving now. But I'll live well, for you and Mom both."
Her eyes were red as she forced a strained smile—one that didn't reach her eyes.
Everything related to Hendrix was now behind her. From this moment on, he no longer had anything to do with her.
She was going to start a new life.

At the hospital, Hendrix sat in silence. His gaze drifted toward the sky beyond the window, a strange emptiness settling in his chest. Somehow, he felt an aching sense of loss that he couldn't explain.
Instinctively, he clutched the silk nightgown that had once belonged to Alyssa. The faint jasmine scent that lingered on it gradually calmed the turmoil in his heart.
Nicole walked over with a bowl of oatmeal in hand. She blew on it before holding it up to his lips.
