Chapter 150
Alex's face looked awful as he turned back to look at Charlotte. "Do you think I, Alex, would be foolish enough to acknowledge someone else's bastard as my son?"
Charlotte was startled by Alex's anger, nervously clenching her fingers as she took a step back. "What if... what if Madeleine is messing around, and she did it on purpose?"
"If she had the capacity to do so, would she be bullied by you?" Alex coldly scolded. "If the Merritt family doesn't want your daughter to continue embarrassing herself, you better take her back and discipline her properly. She's not even married into the He Family yet and she dares to harm my son. Who knows what foolish things she might do if she really marries into us!"
Alex silently cursed Charlotte as a fool in his heart.
"Alex..." Mother Zhuang was a bit panicky.
"If she does anything that harms Madeleine and the child, I will cancel the wedding directly," Alex's voice was deep.
Mother Zhuang stared at Alex in astonishment, then turned around to look at Father Zhuang.
The latter obviously couldn't keep his cool anymore, snorted coldly, and left without caring for anyone else.
"Dear..." Mother Zhuang anxiously called out, then followed him out.
Stanton, seeing that Beckett was determined, feared that he would be angered to death and also followed out.
This matter could be resolved at the family banquet later on.
Beckett was currently agitated and unable to understand the situation, unaware of the seriousness. When he would come to his senses, he would know to obey.
...
In the treatment room.
Jenny, with red eyes, looked at Beckett with a pleading look. "Beckett...Please, for my sake, spare my sister and spare the Merritt family this one time, okay? The Merritt family also doesn't want to sever ties and bring mutual destruction..."
Jenny was telling Beckett that the Merritt family also held leverage over him.
The incident from six years ago, if exposed to the media, and if Zhan Jingxng refused to marry her, could become his scandal.
With these scandals, Beckett's situation in the board of directors would become even more difficult.
Ruby and Clinton were desperately trying to find his weak spot...
Once bitten by a venomous snake, there's no chance at recovery.
"Your face?" Beckett sneered. "I don't recall squaring the account with you."
Jenny was chilled to the bone.
Beckett... Was he serious?
"Beckett, I didn't mean that, please... don't be like this." Jenny pleaded with teary eyes. "Let's think it over, okay? We'll definitely give you a satisfactory response."
"Sister..." Charlotte cried in fear, was Beckett really going to stand up for Madeleine, even if it meant falling out with the Merritt family.
"Shut up." Jenny yelled, nervously looking back at Madeleine. "Maddy, for all the things Charlotte did wrong to you, can I, as her sister, apologize to you on her behalf? What do you want me to do, kneel to you?"
With that, Jenny was about to kneel.
"Sister! Don't do this, on what grounds should she..." Charlotte, in panic, tried to stop Jenny.
But Jenny was already on her knees in front of Madeleine.
Tears welled up in Madeleine's eyes. She knew they were playing her via moral coercion.
Madeleine took a deep breath, her voice trembling as she spoke. "It has nothing to do with you... Even if you kneel, it can't make up for the hurt caused to me by the Charlotte... I once knelt down to beg her, but did she ever let me go?"
Charlotte looked at Madeleine with hatred. "Are you bringing up old scores? It’s been so many years, and you're still holding on to those things!"
"There's no cure for her wickedness," said Beckett, holding Chris in one hand and tugging at Madeleine's wrist with the other, intending to bypass Zhuang Xin-yan and leave. "Tell your parents they only have three days. I hope you don't have to see my methods."
Charlotte was resolutely wicked to an oppressive extent.
Beckett didn't want Madeleine to keep facing them.
Just looking at their faces was re-traumatic for Madeleine.
"Beckett!" said Alex, with a frown, stepping in front of Beckett and Madeleine. "The child is mine."
Beckett frowned, showing no intention of letting go.
"Madeleine, are you sure?" Alex threatened, looking at Madeleine.
Chris's treatment, along with the expenses and the professional connections, all needed Alex.
Madeleine nervously looked at Beckett, head lowered.
"Threatening her with the child? From this, you are unfit to be Chris's father," warned Beckett to Alex.
"Beckett, it’s none of your business! Chris is my son, an undisputed fact. Give the child to me," Alex and Beckett stared each other down.
"Between the two of you snatching the child back and forth, has anyone thought to ask for the child's opinion?" Reuben, sitting in a nearby chair, looked at the time. "You've been occupying public resources for a long time now. It's time to leave."
Beckett glanced at Chris, then led him away from the hospital.
"Chris... who do you want to go with?" Madeleine asked softly.
Reuben was right, they needed to seek the child's opinion.
Chris looked at Alex, and turned back to glance at Zhan Jing Xing.
One was his biological father, the other was his favorite father.
How was he to choose?
"Dad, are you going to marry mom?" Chris asked Alex.
Alex was startled, unable to answer Chris's question directly.
He had told Madeleine many times that except for the title, he could give her everything else.
"Chris, the adult world is complicated, when you grow up you'll understand." Alex consoled softly, not wanting to lie to the child.
"The grown-up world is really difficult to understand, I just don't get it." Chris mo lamented. "But dad, all the children's parents are married. If you can't marry mom, then Chris's family is not complete."
At that, Alex paused, his Adam's apple bobbed up and down, he seemed to want to say something but stopped.
"Dad, I'm a child but I know adults need to take responsibility. Why can't you marry mom?" Chris asked once again, so desperate for his dad to marry his mom and protect her.
Alex took a deep breath, and explained softly. "Chris, mom and I... we can't get married for now. Because... Dad has some things left unfinished. But I promise to give you and mommy a home. Is that okay?"
Chris shook his head. "No."
Seeing Chris's eyes reddening, Alex clenched his fists.
"Chris, mommy will hold you." Madeleine extends her hand to take Chris and hugs him tightly. "I'm sorry Chris, mommy can't give you a complete home, but... mommy will always love you and do everything to protect you. Therefore... it's okay even if there's no daddy."
Chris turns around, looking at Beckett. "Daddy...."
Chris timidly calls out for Beckett as 'Daddy', his voice wavering a bit. Even his biological father doesn't want to marry his mother, let alone Beckett. "Daddy... will you marry my mommy?"
If Zhan can't marry his mother, then he won't be able to call him 'daddy' anymore.
In a few days, it will be the parent's day at the kindergarten.
There is a parents' day every month, and both parents are required to participate.
Every child's parents try to make time to participate in the event with their children. Only Chris, he would sit in a corner and watch the other kids play games.
He has a mommy, but no daddy.
