Beckett's phone buzzed—it was Danna calling. He frowned and ignored it. Danna was basically Stanton and Ruby's little spy. "Do you need to head back?" he asked once Madeleine hung up her call. "It's... Summer's mom. She just got released and wants to meet me," Madeleine muttered, looking distracted. She honestly didn't know how to face that woman, or even what to call her. When the Landry family kicked Madeleine out, she had nowhere to go. It was Dane Price who took her in, letting her crash at his tiny rental apartment. Back then, Dane's mom hadn't been to prison yet. She kept nagging Madeleine to get an abortion, saying the kid would be nothing but dead weight. That no man would ever marry a single mom. She said Madeleine would end up just like her—completely burnt out. Madeleine had actually considered it. The baby was a complete mystery, and she didn't even know who the father was.
