Barbara froze for a second, then her expression tightened with a hint of anxiety.
She glanced around before leaning closer, lowering her voice. "Maddy, tell me the truth—did something really happen to Beckett?"
Madeleine didn't answer right away. She lowered her head, hands balling into tight fists.
