52. ANGEL
My eyes darted around the house as the woman led us into the living room. It reminded me so much of home that for a moment I felt an extreme longing to go back. But that feeling faded the moment Lucas squeezed my hand.
“I’m s-sorry for the mess,” she apologized as she removed toys and blankets from the couch. “Please have a seat.”
I glanced up at Lucas. He nodded and waited for me to take a seat before he sat down.
“I’ll get you something hot to drink, you must be cold.”
She hurried away before we could utter a word.
“I’m so nervous,” I whispered.
Placing his hand on my knee, he squeezed it gently.
I bit my lip, eyes darting around the living room. There was a wooden box in one corner with little handprints painted on them. The floor in front of the box was littered with toys.
My eyes darted over to the other couch where there were more toys, blankets, and some baby things.
The coffee table had been pushed against one wall, leaving the space in the middle open.
