Olivia finally realized who was hitting her. "M-Mom, what are you doing?" she stammered, shielding her head in panic. "You seriously have the nerve to ask what's wrong with me? I haven't slept in a week—and look at you, sleeping like a baby! Do you think I'd be like this if it weren't for you?" Melissa shouted, her voice cracking with hysteria. Her face was twisted with rage, and she smacked Olivia again and again. Olivia said nothing. The guilt had been eating at her, too. Melissa had seen other doctors, but the insomnia only got worse. The entire house had fallen under a dark, heavy mood. She knew she'd screwed up and hadn't dared raise her voice once. "I'm sorry, Mom. I'll go apologize to Demi. I'll beg her to forgive me. Please don't be mad anymore!" Olivia finally cried out after taking a hit to her chest. "You still dare mention apologizing? Last time you tried that, she got so pissed she stopped treating me altogether! She might just cut us off for good if you go again!
