"It's alright. Let's go."
"Do you think she might be drunk at her friend's place? It's so late, and she hasn't come back."
I rubbed my tired eyes. "I don't think so."
After walking a few dozen more steps, Sheree stopped in front of a rusty iron gate and pointed to a door on the second floor. "This is it."
The stairway was narrow and steep, and the hallway was dimly lit, relying on the faint glow from the streetlight outside.
Sheree knocked on the door, and after a moment, a woman came to answer. The woman had a pleasant, kind appearance, the kind that put you at ease.
"Hi, I'm looking for Helen."
"Helen? Oh, she just left."
Sheree looked surprised. "What? Where did she go?"
The woman gave us an address. "She went over to Jake Cooper's place."
After thanking the woman, Sheree and I left together.
She glanced at her phone, which still had no missed calls. Frowning, she asked me, "Why do you think she's wandering around at this hour?"
