I came home from my run to find Valarian sitting at the dining room table trying to use my laptop. My mood has lifted now I've gone for a run, but I'm exhausted as I untie my laces and
slip my shoes off. The run really zapped my energy, and I had to take the long way around because someone fixed the hole in the fence. Tomorrow, I'll have to send someone to open it up again—or maybe install a gate, which would be ideal because we can lock it off at night. Zoe is watching TV with the volume low, barely audible. She smiles at me and gives me a nod, turning back to the TV and pretending to be watching it, when I know she's just keeping an eye on Valarian.
Valarian looks up at me—his cheek is red from resting it on his hand while he tries to use the laptop. Walking over to him, I run my fingers through his hair before bending down and kissing his forehead.
“What are you trying to do?” I ask him, glancing at the computer screen before standing and pulling out the chair beside him. He
