The waiting was the worst part. Three days had passed since our testimony before the High Council, and we had been confined to the palace guest quarters while they deliberated. Not imprisoned, exactly, but we weren't free to leave either. The polite fiction of "protective custody" fooled no one.
I stood at the tall window overlooking the palace courtyard, watching the morning light filter through the autumn leaves. Through our bond, I could feel Kaelos pacing restlessly in his adjoining room, while Ruvan sat in deep meditation, trying to center all three of us.
"They're coming," Kaelos said aloud, his enhanced hearing picking up the sound of approaching footsteps before the rest of us could detect them.
A knock at the door confirmed his observation. "Guardians," came the formal voice of Captain Morris, one of Callista's subordinates. "The High Council requests your immediate presence."
