A week. It had been a whole week since Callista had ignored us, and the house felt like a silent war zone.
I sat at the kitchen table, picking at the soggy cereal in my bowl while staring at the empty chair where Callista usually sat.
The sound of her footsteps upstairs told me she was getting ready for work, but I knew she would wait until Kaelos and I left before coming down to the kitchen.
“Morning,” Kaelos muttered as he entered the kitchen, looking as tired as I felt. The dark circles under his eyes showed that he hadn't slept well either.
“Morning,” I replied softly.
We both heard the bathroom door close upstairs—Callista was taking a shower. Kaelos and I exchanged glances, both thinking the same thing: at least thirty minutes before she came down, which meant we had time for breakfast in this sad peace.
“This can’t go on,” Kaelos said as he poured his coffee. His hand was shaking slightly—either from the caffeine or the stress.
