Three minutes passed.
Dominic did not react.
Jeremy’s crying grew louder, rougher, the kind that scraped the throat raw. His small shoulders shook as if the sound was being torn out of him rather than released.
Dominic picked up his phone.
He opened a voice call.
After a brief pause, he spoke, slow, even, restrained.
“Alright. Be safe.”
His tone was calm, almost indifferent, as if the person on the other end of the line was someone of no particular importance.
After sending the message, he set the phone down.
Jeremy hiccupped.
Then he stopped wailing and began to cry silently, no sound, only trembling shoulders and wet lashes. Somehow, it looked even more broken. More pitiful.
