The muffled sound from under the covers stopped abruptly when Hazel heard Shawn say, "Mom." She blinked and perked up her ears, eavesdropping on his conversation.
"Alright. I'll head over now," Shawn said into the phone.
Hazel resumed her quiet sobbing, though it was now intermittent and less genuine.
Shawn glanced at the lumpy shape under the covers. He lied to the phone, saying, "Hazel's asleep. I'll come alone."
At the mention of her name, the crying stopped again. Hazel held her breath and stayed silent, straining to hear every word while pretending to be asleep.
Shawn smirked, catching on to her act. "Got it," he said before ending the call.
As soon as he hung up, Hazel started crying again.
"I need to head home for a bit. Mom and Dad want to see me," Shawn announced.
"Okay," came her teary reply.
