The afternoon light filtered through the train window, casting shadows across the car. I looked out on the almost glowing city. It was views like this that made the ugliness of the city seem so unreal, as if I could close my eyes for a moment and when I opened them, the facts of my life would somehow just be a bad dream.
And it felt like they had changed just that quickly.
Had it really only been four days ago that I was waiting tables, fretting about Mom, and resigned to work to death and still die in debt?
My mind raced, replaying the events of the past few days – the fake wedding, the encounter with Lorenzo, and the looming threat that hung over my and Albert's head because Lorenzo suddenly decided that I hadn't been a waste of genetics and needed me. Lorenzo had seemed serious. I would almost say desperate, but just as arrogant and controlling as ever. I didn't know what to do about him other than avoid him.
