Rosalie froze, the phone sliding from her hand and hitting the floor. Cold swept through her veins like ice.

"Rosa?" Abigail asked from the bed. "Is there news about Julian?"
Rosalie snapped back, her eyes burning red, but she refused to cry. She forced a smile that hurt more than crying ever could. "Mom, it's not about Julian."
She bent to pick up the phone, keeping her voice calm though her words faltered. "Something urgent came up at work. I have to go now. I'm going to look for Julian now."
She turned to Hilda. "Stay with my mom. Don't leave her alone."
