Dexter caught that rare compliment from her and couldn't help puffing up a little with pride.
Grinning, he asked, "Don't you think I'm just like that song Deep Sea Girl? You know, a beam of light cutting through the dark, warm and dazzling?"

"At least you're finally laughing," Dexter smiled, satisfied. "Worth it, even if I totally made a fool of myself."
But her smile slowly faded. She looked him in the eye, serious. "You're putting too much pressure on me when you act like this. I just want us to stay friends. But if you keep this up, I don't think I can even be that."
