Scarlett's POV
The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the silence. It was too quiet. I also didn't feel Lucien's presence; he usually wrapped his arms around me like a living octopus. This time, I was free from his clinginess.
A low groan escaped my lips as I dragged my hand to my temple, rubbing it in a circular motion. My head throbbed a little, which, as usual, was the result of the previous evening—not entirely sober and warmed by the small, heated atmosphere last night that... I didn't want to think about.
I blinked my eyes open and wasn't surprised to find the bed beside me empty—after all, I'd already noticed Lucien wasn't here. I glanced at the sheets, which had already been changed to clean linen rather than the mess of tangles and sweat Lucien and I had left behind. My cheeks heated instantly.
